Wow! I realize it’s been a long time since I’ve blogged anything about anything useful or even me. Well, where shall I begin?
First, we’ve settled into Kemah, TX – south of Houston. I am now working at UTMB as an Educational Coordinator – definitely a different student body than those I worked with at my previous undergraduate institutions! And I FINALLY have time to get me back (or make it easier to find the time) and train how I need to train to be successful – or actually compete at various distances of triathlon!
There’s a been a few races, so here we go – The Skinny!
April 6, 2014 – Memorial Hermann Ironman Galveston 70.3 – Yea, I ended up doing it. Finished it. And was happy to prove some peeps wrong. Crappy weather – the swim was rough, hit some rain around the turnaround of the bike, and the run got a little warm but I had friends & family out there and Dustin’s Priority 1 Air Rescue work family out there to cheer me and him on! It was pretty awesome and I’m glad I did it because it reminded me of what I had been missing (well, all except that chaffing… the gift that kept giving for over a month… OUCH!) I should have trained a little harder and A LOT longer! 😉 (8:03:23)
April 13, 2014 – Diva’s Half Marathon, Galveston, TX – I signed up the day before as I was working the expo for Bondi Band and was like, why not? So I did and thankfully my body didn’t seem to care too much that I’d just done a 70.3 the week before. I handled the first half and then switched to run/walk intervals with the great group at Fit Tri Run. I was content with the finish… not my best… not my worst…. but I was also carrying around my weight gain from being lazy for so long! (2:53:16)
April 27, 2014 – Kemah Triathlon (Sprint), Kemah, TX – So this one being literally 2 miles from my house, I had to do it and I love SALT WATER swims so count me in! It was even better that my NEW Betty Designs It wasn’t as rough as Galveston but it was still making you work out there in the water. Bike was hella windy on the way down and on the way back I was averaging over 21 mph (say what?!)… I was putting in work! Loved the race, loved the course AND I LOVED THE ICE TUBS after the race even more!!! (1:56:24.90)
I took some time off to train – 3 races back to back like that, wowza! But it got me kick started and reminded me why I love the sport of triathlon!
June 1, 2014 – Tejas Triathlon (Sprint), Sugarland, TX – It was a muddy transition area, which made things a little slick. The swim was an easy 600 followed by a 12 mile bike – it was flat and fast, I loved it! And the run was pretty shaded. Good effort that day but came up short (these Athenas in TX are all super tall… which if you know me, I’m completely vertically challenged). I probably won’t do this one again because it wasn’t well organized like I had hoped. (1:44:54.20)
June 15, 2014 – Sylvan Beach Triathlon (Sprint), LaPorte, TX – I thought this would be a good race and it totally wasn’t my day… the swim was in the bay, it was mad that day but not angry so relatively speaking, it was a good swim. The bike… I had the 1080 and the Sub 9 disc on (all other races, I’ve been using an 808 front and Renn disc rear because Dustin’s been racing so I took his wheels this race… well, his disc, the 1080’s mine) – this course was not well marked on little pot holes or holes in general…. for Texas, it was hilly because of the ramps we were using… run was hot but good. I probably wouldn’t do this again because of the bike – literally, I found myself being too cautious because of all the holes and bumps… (1:55:53.00)
July 13, 2014 – Shadow Creek Triathlon (Sprint), Pearland, TX – it was hotter than hell that day. The swim wasn’t as hot as I thought it’d be but it was warm – huge hill to climb up coming out of the pond/lake… not how I like to get my legs back but oh well! Good swim, bike was good and flat and fast and the run was so FREAKING HOT! I got passed by another Athena in the last mile, Dustin came back for me and I just couldn’t pull it together… I wanted to cry (well, I did a little – thank goodness for sunglasses)… I did what I could get done. I’ll be back for this one…. I have a bone to pick with this course next year! 😉
August 3, 2014 – Rivercities Triathlon (Sprint), Bossier City, LA – this race is special to me because it was my very first triathlon…. EVER! It’s hilly, the swims hot, and the run is shaded. Because of all the storms, the swim was actually COOL… I couldn’t believe it… and neither could anyone else! The bike was hilly but I thought it was hillier so that’s a good thing. The run was great! Lots of sponges and a little spray station under trees…. ahhhh! Of course the garb is great and even more so the race is just awesome! So here we go… I gave blood that Friday (DO NOT EVER DO THIS!!!!) BUT despite that, I came out with an improvement… when I started in 2010 I finished with a 2:22:42 and this year, post knee injury and almost 50 pounds heavier, I took my time down to a 2:13:45 – seriously I wonder what I would have finished up with if I had not given blood!!!
Now I’m training my ass of for 5150 Galveston. I’m hungry for it. I’m dropping weight. I’m doing my homework and I hope the Athena’s are ready because I’m coming to fight hard that day! Look for me in that Betty Designs trisuit … I’ve been wearing it all year and more than likely you’ve commented about it… to me or someone else… not going to lie – I appreciate compliments on my kit during my run or before the race and it totally is Bad Ass – that’s one thing we can all agree on is that Betty Style is the coolest out there right now! It’s been nice to hear positive vibes every race and even cooler to tell people how incredibly awesome the kits are! (Most comfortable kit I’ve owned and great quality!) 🙂
Here’s to finishing the season on a high note before marathon training begins… 2 in January for turning 35!
