Balance. Find Me Now.

This week has been an interesting one to say the least. Ironman training kicked into full speed with my being on-call for work. I get calls advising in situations involving students or I am being called as I need to report something up the chain involving a student. Evert call is unique and never the same. I used to get a lot of crazy things happening on-call and now my calls usually happen before 10p… I think it’s because I keep a positive train of thought with my duty rotation. HOWEVER, this week was different!! In the mix of being on-call, working, training, I get to go through my 32nd birthday ALONE! Needless to say, I was bummed. I didn’t want to deal with the week and one of my co-workers offered to take the phone for my special day but I was like ‘nah’ and thinking ‘what the hell do I have planned… nothing, I’ll keep the phone.’ (side note, my staff and some of their RAs surprised me with a cake and cards and it was fantastic! And the birthday club hit me up the next day with cake and Mississippi State Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream (milk fat content is amazingly high but…. it was my birthday! – Dante knew exactly what I liked after some covert operational questioning!)

So I’m waiting on my trainer to get here and so I’ve been using the spin bikes… I’m sure, so SURE the other night, the guys on both sides of me at the gym were wondering what I did because as soon as I got off the duty phone, I was in contact with my supervisor, back to the Resident Director, back to him… I felt like I was in the middle of a ping pong table…. BOING! Finally, I had to say screw it and write down my stats from the bike and head out… handle what was left of the situation to return back to the bike and then swim… which was okay, I guess. The life guards at the pool have been great! They’re nice enough to hold the phone for me while I get my workout in and will come and flag me down if it starts to ring… typically it doesn’t so that’s good. All I kept thinking is how I am going to find this balance and wishing that night it would find me quickly!

Truthfully though, I’m probably going to have to get used to a bit of compromise. And get used to feeling exhausted. It’s what I’m calling balance… it’ll have to be my balance but at least I know there may have to be some compromise with my training a few times this semester… but I’ll get it in and get it done!!

I can have my cake and eat it too – at least that’s what I’m going to keep telling myself!! 🙂

  1. Happy birthday!!! I totally understand about the balance thing. My training for my marathon gets up'd majorly this week & work is crazy, so I've got to find a balance too.
