Sunfish Triathlon – RACE REPORT!!

Well, Friday’s drive to the race started off interesting… my bike rack strap broke and caused my bike to fall off the blazer… luckily we had the other bottom strap on and my bike sustained a lot of damage but we at least didn’t see it get ran over by the 16 wheeler following us at 70 mph!! We pulled over, the dark horse ended up in the back seat and Dustin’s remained on the one good set of straps. You know, I’ve been thinking for a while about getting a bike rack the loads from the wheels and this secured the deal. Thule’s bike rack was OK but the strap that broke shows no signs of dry rot and it’s been well cared for in the past 3 years I’ve owned it. I am absolutely heartbroken over my bike. I’ve been on the phone with the insurance company and luckily it’s covered on my renter’s insurance however, it’s still going to be costly. My race wheels were on it, yes my Zipp 404 Zedtech and Zipp dimpled disk were involved too… devastation. 😦

VMR arrived to Meridian, MS and instantly wreaked havoc on packet pick-up, checking into hotels, & Outback (thank goodness with 20 of us, Susan and Renee thought ahead and broke us up into the early arrivals and the later arrivals to get some grub and in my case, 3 beers to calm me down! Outback thanks you too, I’m sure! lol) After dinner and having a couple laughs with our group (which I needed), we headed back to the hotel for some rest. After all, we had an early morning the next day. Needless to say, the people in the room next to us were smoking weed and since I could smell it (and they had kids in their room), I called it in to the front desk. I will let the hotel remain nameless because the response I got was, “oh, okay, I’ll call them and let them know no illegal drugs”… all I could think was are you freaking kidding me???

Dustin and I woke up early the next morning and headed to the race. I set up my transition next to Dustin because we weren’t assigned spots. Did the pre-race iPod deal, bathroom, little socialization, then focused on the swim… I mean, I hadn’t swam in almost 2 months – Sunday was my first day in a pool and then it was the race the second time… there ya go. I swam a 13:57, considering no swim time, I was completely happy! T1 was a little slower than usual – 1:10. My bike plain out sucked! I averaged 14.7 in 1:08:39… I was battling keeping it straight the entire ride and we had had to leave my breaks open and we think someone may have seen them open and decided to close them which made resistance a bitch for me. When I finally got back from the hills, I had a 2:02 T2, I’d like to thank the yellow Felt that racked in my spot – JERK! That is one of my pet peeves… this happened to me in Key West last year. Show some courtesy please. So I wouldn’t ruin anyone elses transition, I found a spot on the outside fencing and leaned my bike up… I was made about the bike and this just sent me into extreme pissiness. Again, thank you to the yellow Felt that racked in my spot. If we would have had bike numbers, I would have turned their ass in for a penalty. The run was slow, it was hot, and at that point, I was doing what I needed to do to finish because I was feeling that the past 24 hours was bad and just going along for the run… average 13:57 minute/mile, for a 42:08 run… horrible 5k but whatever. I was super happy for my teammates that placed and had a good showing!!! (even though, I’m sure I showed my own frustrations, I’M SORRY FOR THAT!) I was proud of Dustin and his 3rd place in the Clydesdale 39 & under division.

VMR representing at Sunfish!! What a group! We took over!!

This race was worse for me than my first triathlon ever… I feel as though we never really know how something will affect on us on race day… certainly my bike played a huge factor on my mentality and I let the stuff I have no control over affect me. I decided on the ride home from Meridian that I had to shake it off and all would be taken care of some how. Sunday I was back out in the heat and ran 6 miles since I’m training for the Goofy Race & a Half Challenge… whatever I run Saturday, I double for Sunday.

Tonight my bike is going in for a quote… I guess I’ll be reporting soon how much damage I really have to look at… ugh. It’s like my Mom said the other day though, this is material and with some of the health issues my family (my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and has since had surgery and has been cleared, but a rough couple of months none the less) has been going through, this is small stuff.

How have you shaken off bothersome things before a race? Or did you?

  1. I'm still trying to shake the run leg of Sunfish. I felt off from the get go, but managed a good swim (for me) and bike, by the time I got to the run, I was toast. No calories on the bike, big mistake and couldn't take in any on the run (just too icky feeling). Live and learn. Each race better prepares us for the next one. I know a lot of athletes in your predicament would have thrown in the towel without attempting the course. You finished! We are VMR!!

  2. dude, sorry the dark horse took a digger…i'm glad you guys at least got it ride-able for the race. hope it's recovery goes quickly and your next race is back to stellar. good luck w the goofy training; when is that race?

  3. I'm on a bike search now… so it'll all be good soon! Goofy will run January 7&8 – 1/2 marathon the first day, marathon the next day… Should make me better for the IM TX run – too bad it won't be that cool! Lol
